One observation any foreigner quickly makes in Russian big cities is how much work women put into their appearance — they often wear heels even in places that are uncomfortable to walk, they use a good amount of makeup daily, often wear clothes that may seem provocative in other countries, and in general seem to go the extra mile to look attractive. When looking for a partner or date, women often expect grandiose romantic gestures, lavish gifts, dates at expensive restaurants, vacation trips paid for by their beau, improved housing, and the like. It is not uncommon for young women to date older males with higher social status. Most drivers are still male, and it is not uncommon to have the boyfriend or husband drive his girlfriend or wife places, and this is a subtle form of dominance. Men typically open doors for women and make other chivalrous gestures. Various types of sexual advances and harassment are still fairly commonplace in the workplace and generally in social settings, more so than in the West. Attitudes toward homosexuality and LGBT are also much more conservative in Russia than in Europe or the United States.
