I have purchased table runners for others. One is always gracing my mother’s kitchen table. Another is deadbolt displayed on a friends. That said, most of the souvenirs I’ve bought on my travels are handmade, by local artisans. And I love them all. Examples are: a pair of crude clay Mayan statues, about a foot tall that I bought in a Cancun flea market in the late 1980s. A large square hand painted plate of a farm scene in Portugal. A small round painted plate of flowers from Romania. A moonstone set in a copper ring from a tiny jewelry shop in Bosnia. A set of boulder opal earrings and pendant from Australia. A very small hand painted bowl of a bird from South Africa. An embroidered wall hanging from Chile. They are all one of a kind and unique. None have much monetary value, but every time I look at them I am reminded of the experience of being in these places. That is what is important- the memories, the joy of being there!
